Gee, thanks.

You know all those entertainment awards, right? Music, movie, TV, whatever. I wish somebody would get up one day to accept their award with just those two simple words. Maybe smile, hold up the trophy a bit, then:

“Gee, thanks.”

And go sit back down.

Then wouldn’t it be cool if everybody started doing that? What would the networks do with all the extra time?

Because, really—as far as thank-you’s and acceptance speeches, hasn’t it all pretty much been said?

I’ve been kind of putting off this post for just that reason. Of course I’m flattered and grateful and humbled and yadda yadda yadda. But what could I possibly say without sounding like a complete ass?

The Thinking Blogger Award

thinkingblogger21.jpg

It all started last week when I won received the Thinking Blogger Award from Lyrical Fool. I was pretty happy about it at the time. Still am, truth be told. Not so much to have “won” (read here to learn why it’s not an award so much as an internet meme) something but:

  1. Because I received it from someone I had no idea existed. Up until then, she’d been what you might call a “lurker” here at Chris Wondra . com. And
  2. The criteria for the award.

So anyway, I knew I had to post about this because putting that award in your sidebar is pretty cool. But if I leave it at that, people will wonder what it is, and with no explanation (or links), who’s to say I didn’t just copy and past it there without really, ahem, “winning” it?

The award/meme also stipulates that each winner pass it on to five other worthy bloggers. So there was some responsibility as well.

For the record, I don’t like memes. So, fellow bloggers, please never “tag” me with anything. Still, the award/meme seemed pretty cool–because you’re not supposed to give it to just anybody.

So who gets it from me, right? I’m still wondering that myself. I’m going to take this responsibility seriously and do a little hunting around. I’m not a huge blog reader myself. So I’m taking my time with this one.

Then, as all this is going through my head, guess what happens. I wake up this morning, do a little surfing, and bingo–almost every blog I read has now won the Thinking Blogger Award.

And I’ve won it a second time.

So, you know, how can I be left thinking anything but, “now this is just silly”? Not that all these blogs don’t deserve to be recognized. I certainly wouldn’t be visiting them myself if I didn’t think they were good. It just seems a bit, well, silly is all. It’s the nature of a meme, I guess. Like a chain letter, sooner or later, everybody gets one.

But then I check my incoming links and I think, “Holy Crap, how can this be happening?”:

Because this guy gives me a thumbs up with his Blog of the Weekblogoweek.jpg and a nice little write up.

And this guy comes out of the clear blue sky (well my sky anyway, maybe not yours), meaning, again, I’d never heard of him, to say “Chris Wondra is ‘Da Man’

Soooo . . .to everyone here, there, and in my comments section lately–with all your kind words and the taking of time to write them . . .Gee, Thanks!

Oh, by the way, I just looked up “gee” in my dictionary of slang to be sure I spelled it right. I thought this was interesting:

gee! By mid-C20’s the usual spelling of Jee!, an original euphemism, now mostly U.S. colloquial corruption of Jesus!, as oath or exclamation.

There. Now hopefully you don’t feel like you’ve completely waisted the last three minutes of your life.

yeah, not a big meme fan, either. especially the exponential chain-letter side of it.

my answer has always been to snip that part off unless it’s something that really interests me (which thinkingBlogger did actually).

actually it was lyricalFool (she tagged you with the award) who introduced me to your site, but i found out a week later that my wife has been a fan of yours for some time now.

if the *gee, thanks* thing doesn’t catch on you could always go back to the sally fields acceptance speech.

that has almost become a cele-bratty meme in and of itself

    Yes! I inspired a post! I inspired a post!

    I am truly honored.

    Gee, thanks.

You know, Shamoo, the more I think about it . . .I think you might have.
    Huh.

    Gee, thanks

I always think the acceptance speech should match the grandeur of the event and the importance of the award to you. If you want to make a political point or a call for help then do so. Otherwise a simple, “thanks, this means a lot and it’s appreciated” is fine
