New Words: From the mouths of middle schoolers

October 11th, 2007 · 6 Comments

A perfect example of how language is alive and growing. I learned two new words today.

Floweremabob–Noun. A word for anything you can’t think of the name of; used in place of thingamabob, used most often for things like this.

As in: “Hand me that flowermabob over there.”

Definitionize–Verb. To write the definition of a word, as you would do with a list of vocabulary words.

As in: “Mr. Wondra, do we have to definitionize all these words?

This is how language develops! Great stuff, thanks for sharing.

With the right attitude–stuff like this can be really fun.

    Thanks for stopping, Mark.

Heh. One of my COLLEGE students came up with “betterly” the other night. I was knocked into stunned silence - I think they do it to me on purpose…

    Hey Mrs. Chili,

Awesome! Do you mean like this?

Betterly–Adverb. A word used in comparison to indicate that one thing was done with more quality or at a higher level or degree of difficulty. Often indicating growth, or a scale of progression.

As in: It is important to continue to teach betterly.

Is that how it was used? Thanks for stopping by and sharing!

I used to think thunk was a word for the longest time. I also made up the word ‘Wakasakanova’ but, it doesn’t really mean anything, it’s purpose is to run up to someone with it, scream it loudly and insanely and run off muttering something having to do with pancakes and how they should make them in different flavors, proving you’re indifferent.

Another word would be ‘boon’ or the backwards spelling of ‘noob’ and one that I accidentally came up with one day when trying to type ‘lol’ to a friend which I accidentally misspelled as ‘kik’, one letter to the left of L is k, and to the left of O is I, so, yeah. I KiK anyone who uses KiK (that was really awful).

My english teacher says things I doubt are words sometimes. Like I would be listening to what she said…but I need to think about if its a word first… of course then I remember she’s too smart to make up words in front of the class…

Me: Hi. How are you Chris?

Chris: Not bad, not bad. You?

    Me: Pretty good…

    Chris: Weather’s nice, huh?

    Me: Not really.

Chris: So, see any good movies lately?

Me: Hmm… Yeah, I saw ” Fred Claus “. You know, the one where Vince Vaughn is Santa’s brother?

Chris: Oh yeah, how was it? My daughter wanted to see it.

Me: I gotta say it was really, really, good.

    Chris: Cool…

    Me: Um-hmm…

    Chris: So…

    Me: What?

    Chris: Oh, nothing, just…

    Me: Wow… Awkward…

    Chris: Kind of…

Me: I read your last article.

    Chris: Yeah? Whaddya think?

    Me: Better than Fred Claus.

    Me: Yeah, and it shows!

Chris: I’m glad you feel that way…

Me: So, yeah, I gotta get to class soon…

    Chris: Me too…

    Me: Wait, don’t you teach my next class… ” Englishy Skillz… Stuff… “?

Chris: Oh, yeah… Sounds like I can do it ” betterly ” than you!

Me: Oh, hehe, I get it…

    Chris: Yup…

    Me: Ok then, bye.

    Chris: Later, alligator!

    Me: Heh, yeah… ” In a while, crocodile! ”

    Chris: …

    Me: …
