Somebody please just like, shoot me.

I’m correcting quizzes for Treasure Island, the novel we are currently reading. Each question requires an essay/short answer response.

The first question is: Describe Treasure Island, including the hills and vegetation.

This is one of the responses:

“Treasure Island has like trees and like different types and there is like a stream in it and a spring with like clean water also there are like scattered big rocks and grasses and kinda bushes.”

Ugh . . .

The embarrassing thing is I’ve been teaching this group of kids now for almost 27 weeks.

Sheesh.

So how does one get through to a 6th grader on the importance of reading and reading comprehension?

    Hey Chris,

Maybe have some select students read their papers aloud and hope the comparison will allow the individual in question to put some pieces together on his/her own? Just a thought – I’m certainly no teacher.

I’ve got one for you! – In my son’s grade 7 class last week the teacher asked for an example of mob mentality. My son raised his hand and gave the example of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. The teacher complimented him on his example and then this professional educator upon whom so many of our neighbourhood adolescents rely on for factual information proceeds to authoritatavely state to the class this was an important event in world history because for many years the wall had been used to segregate Jews from the rest of the German population(!!!!!)

My son said he wanted to raise his hand and correct her with a primer on Communism and the Cold War, but decided not to for fear of repurcussion because “she likes to be right”.

So, as a parent how does one handle something like this? I know the teacher – She certainly isn’t incompetent and everyone makes mistakes, but at the same time she has taken responsibility for the education of our children. Fortunately my son recognized the error but how many children are now carrying that around with them as fact?

Darren- I am a teacher and I can unequivocally state, that an educator that is obviously that misinformed and fine with it, has NO place in education. There are certain “facts” that should be deemed as basic knowledge; the Bush administration should implement No Teacher Left Behind and fire this idiot!

LMAO @ “no teacher left behind”

    Hahahahahaha!

I put down “Mr Wondra is a Jedi” for a couple questions but my answers weren’t that dumb :P . You’re gonna be in even more frustration when you have to grade all our 1280 (or something like that) projects. What a good way to end the year! Sorry about that :( .
